A long long time ago, on a forum far away I started writing a short story in episodic segments called "chapters" that were really only paragraphs. I use the main character, Mav, in my webcomic and adapted his back story from this short story, though it required serious tweaking to fit into the comic. This short story is part 1 of a trilogy of short stories I wrote/am writing, I started almost six years ago and still haven't finished the third part. Anyways, since I apparently have nothing better to do I'm going to post a new chapter here every day (I'm just going to edit this post instead of having dozens of consecutive posts) so without further ado:
Chapter 1
“There has been a thought in my mind lately. It has always been there, but I could never think about it. Now that I find myself with nothing to push it out of my head, I am confronted with it. It plagues my mind, and haunts my dreams, this one thought ‘Who made me? Why did they make me? And what did they make me for?’ I didn’t even know if I was even born, or just created in a lab. I know this is connected to a dream I have been having, every night. There is a boy walking in a city with his parents. He could not imagine being happier than he is now. Then, all of a sudden, the sky turns black. The sound of thunder fills the air, lightning lights up the sky. A dark, mysterious figure emerges. He is entirely black, except for a few patches of red, the deepest red you could imagine. He has a long, curling tail. There is a grin on his face as the people of the city attack him. He kills them all with no effort at all. His eyes are bright red, and they grow brighter with each victim he destroys, almost as if killing innocent people gives him pleasure. A ship lands in the distance, and soldiers come out. They immediately capture all the children, the little boy included. Once the ship is far-gone, a smirk appears on the evil figure’s face. He charges a large ball of energy, and hurls it at the planet. The boy looks back to see a bright explosion, and where his home planet once was, now, there is nothing. The boy is so distraught that he begins to cry. One of the guards hits him over the head, knocking him unconscious. He is awakened, and taken to a chamber. He sees many children there, some he knows, and some he doesn’t. Then the evil one appears. ‘Hello little ones, my name is Nightmare, and soon you will all be my slaves!’ Then the guards shut all the doors, and the children are brainwashed. They are given no food, they are not allowed to sleep, they can only hear the voice of Nightmare, and only see his face. When the process was over, they were taken back to their cells. Had his own parents not been brutally murdered by Nightmare, the little boy would have given in. It was only his hatred for Nightmare that kept him sane in there. He would pretend to be servant to him, but be ever ready for the time to make him pay for what he did to his people, and to countless others. Years later, the boy is put in a pod, and the pod is shot out into space. That is all that happens in the dream; everything becomes a blur after that. I don’t know who that boy is, or why I am seeing him in my dreams. Could that be me? Or is this just a coincidence? This is why I must find out about who I am, and where I came from."
Chapter 2
Mav leaves a note at his house for anyone who went looking for him.. He knew that if he told them in person, they would not let him leave alone. The note read as follows: “I have decided to search out my past. I don’t know where I will go, or whom I will meet. I have gathered some information on the location of the lab I was found in. Wish me luck, Mav.” Mav flies to the coordinates he found. When he approaches the building in the center, he notices that it is quite run down, and parts of the ceiling have been collapsed. “Well, I’m surprised this place was never torn down, but in a rural area like this, who would have known that all sorts of experiments were going on inside…” Mav closes his eyes. “Do I dare enter this building? The answers to the questions that have plagued me for so long may be inside… but… do I really want to know them?” He opens his eyes and stares at the building. “It must be done” Mav says, and enters the building to find an old laboratory, long since abandoned. Broken test tubes are littered across the ground, vines grown on machinery, but to Mav’s luck, he sees a computer that looks to be in working order and approaches it. He activates the computer, and scrolls through lists of data before he comes to a file titled “Subject: Maverick Hunter” He then opens a log entry. “A small pod has landed near our facility. A child was inside, and it was badly injured. This is the perfect chance to test our ‘nanobot fusion theory’” “This has to be me!” Mav says to himself. “I have to read more” Mav opens the file marked “second entry” “The process was a success. Due to the nanobots fused with each individual cell in his body, he will grow to the approximate human age of 25, and remain as such.” Mav reads on “The government has stopped our funds. I am afraid that we must entrust the boy to the care of local villagers who have no contact with the outside world and its technology. I leave here the calculations my team has made as to the approximate distance from earth, but as the celestial bodies move constantly, it is near impossible to predict exactly from whence it came.” “END OF ENTRIES”
Chapter 3
Mav knew this was about him. He knew so much more now, but still so little. He accesses the file that contained the calculations made by the team. “well, I know the general vicinity of where to go… but how do I get there?” Mav says to himself “Hmm… maybe they fixed up my pod. I had better check around to see if I can find it.” Mav says, looking around for more doors. Mav enters into a cargo bay, and immediately saw it, a small, white, spherical pod, with one curved window in the front. Mav approached it, and, almost as if it recognized him, it opened. Mav took a deep breath and got inside. A voice said “Mission complete, returning to head quarters.” And the door shut on Mav. He turned around to look out the window. “well, a least THIS thing knows where I’m going” Mav says to himself. Once the pod left the atmosphere, Mav looked back and saw the Earth, but it soon disappeared. The pod was capable of extreme speeds, and Mav would reach his destination, which was over 20 light years away, in two weeks. The voice comes back “Autopilot has been engaged, starting sleep cycle.” A purple gas fills the pod, and Mav is put under a cryogenic sleep, during which Mav would remember much from the past…
Chapter 4
As Mav closes his eyes, he falls into a deep sleep. He sees a facility. There are rows of cells and doors. He sees the boy, older but still young. Nightmare is between him and someone who looks similar to the young boy, but older. Nightmare leads the two to a room. They enter, and go into a larger room beyond that one, but Nightmare does not. The two begin to fight. They fight evenly, until the older one gets the upper hand, and eventually wins. The younger of the two looks up at Nightmare, and sees a pair of eyes, penetrating his skin, looking into the very depths of his soul, just staring at him, unblinkingly… he would never forget those eyes…
