Welcome, everyone! It has crossed my mind that not all members to the Show Me Your News Forums have ever actually been on forums. After all, we do have listeners that may have simply stumbled across the podcast on iTunes.
So I'll give you all a general overview of how forums work.
If you look at the main index, you will see several groups with names such as "Show Me Your News", "General", and "Arts".
These are referred to as categories. Categories give a very general overview of what to expect in this area. Within categories there are Boards, which are also referred to as "Forums" sometimes. The boards are more specific, but still general to allow for separate topics.
Within each boards, there are topics, or "threads" as they are more commonly known. Each topic is, obviously, a different topic about one thing or another. The start of each topic, sometimes referred to as an "OP" (original post), starts the discussion. All the posts afterwards, replies, add to the discussion. Each thread is a discussion about a single topic. If you want to discuss a different topic, you make a new thread.
In every board, there are threads which are always at the top of the page, regardless of when they were last posted in. These are called "stickied threads", or "stickies" for short. Stickies are threads that generally address important topics about the boards, or very helpful threads such as a list of Friend Codes. It's heavily recommened you read these threads, as it is against the rules to post a topic which is already addressed in a sticky. Only moderators, the forum equivelant of police officers, may sticky threads.
Another type of sticky, an Announcement, is a very important thread. It is a sticky that appears on every board; not just one. Whenever a new Announcement appears, please read it.
On the side of each post, there is information about a person. This is called their "mini-profile". Their mini-profile includes things such as their username, post count, and avatar. An "avatar" is the small image in the mini-profile. You may choose your own avatar, however, it must not break the rules in the Official Rules Thread.
At the bottom of each post is a user's signature. This is a short string of text, often with an image, that a user may make themselves. It must not break the rules in the Official Rules Thread.
If you wish to respond directly to a post that another user made in a thread, you may use the "Quote" feature. This will quote the post in your own, so that it is clear that you are referring to this post.
One feature of the forum is the ability to change the "skin" of the forum. A "skin" is the general way a forum looks cosmetically; the colors, the banner at the top, etc. It does not change the actual structure of the forum, or any posts.
Thank you, and please enjoy your stay at the Show Me Your News Forums.
A note to all staff members: If there is anything you feel should be added to this post, feel free to add it yourself.
